How To Make Weed Cake / Space Cake: The Ultimate Cannabis Recipe!

Space Cake may be the most popular cannabis food ("edible") of the Netherlands and maybe even worldwide, and there are some good reasons for that. A spacecake is perfect for parties or special occasions, but also for people who want to enjoy cannabis without smoke in their lungs. In this spacecake tutorial guide we explain exactly how to easily make your own spacecake with only a handful of ingredients!

You can keep it really simple by buying a ready-to-use cakemix. Because we see ourselves as real chef cooks that can do better, we're going to make spacecake from scratch.

In this recipe we start off by making weed butter (THC-infused butter), and then we use that butter to make the weed cake. If you don't feel like making weed butter first, you can also skip this step and simply throw ground weed (without stems) into the cake batter. This will make your whole house smell like weed, and the cake won't be as delicious. That's why we advise to make weed butter first, so that you don't have any green pieces of weed in your cake.

Spacecake ingredients

Below are all the ingredients for a space cake. You can adjust this recipe a little bit to your taste; but this is a delicious recipe!

 

Ingredients:

  • Weed (about 5 to 10 grams) or hash (be aware that hash is very hard to dose)
  • 200 grams of flour
  • 200 grams of unsalted butter
  • 200 grams of sugar
  • 100 millilitres of milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 sachet of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 sachet of vanilla sugar (or other ingredients that you like, e.g. chocolade chips, fruit or cinnamon sugar)

 

Other necessities:

  • Cake Tin (or cupcake / muffin cases)
  • Oven
  • Furnace
  • Weed Grinder
  • Mixer and Mixing Bowl
  • 2x pans (1 large, 1 small)
  • 1x Spoon
  • 1x Kitchen Sieve
  • 1x Tray for under the sieve
  • 1x Old Tea Towel
  • 1x Weed Grinder

 

 

Making Weed Butter

Before we start making the weed cake, we first need to make weed butter. You don't need much to make weed butter. The only ingredients are - you guessed it - weed and butter. But to make cannabis-infused butter out of these ingredients, you'll need a few other things too. Below is a complete list of all necessities for making weed butter:

  • Weed (quantity as desired)
  • Butter
  • Furnace
  • 2x pans (1 large, 1 small)
  • 1x Spoon
  • 1x Kitchen Sieve
  • 1x Tray for under the sieve
  • 1x Old Tea Towel
  • 1x Weed Grinder

 

How To Make Weed Butter: step-by-step preparation

Here's the full recipe for how to make weed butter, explained step by step. There's pictures of every step of the process at the bottom of the page.

 

Step 1: Grind the weed into small pieces. To make sure that all cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.) dissolve well into the butter, it's important to crumble the weed into small chunks to make the surface area as large as possible. This can be done very easily using a weed grinder (available in our online store). It doesn't need to be ground up extremely fine or into powder, but it's not efficient to work with complete buds. If you're using cutting waste (sugar leaves), it's not necessary to use a grinder. Remove the large branches, but throw in the small stems: these contain precious THC as well!

 

Step 2: Fill the large pan with water, put it on the stove, and heat the water until it starts boiling. You may want to add a tiny bit of olive oil to the water, to keep it from splashing and boiling over.

 

Step 3: Put the butter and the weed in the small pan. Put this small pan into larger pan, so that it floats on the water. This will heat up the small pan, while making sure the temperature never exceeds 100°C. This is called "au bain marie". The butter will now start melting, so keep stirring using the spoon to mix it with the weed.

 

Step 4: Let the butter boil for between 2 and 12 hours. The longer you let it boil, the stronger your butter will become, while the taste of weed will become less. The exact time that you should let it boil depends on your personal preference and on the amount of time you can spare. Do you want the butter to have almost no taste of weed? Then let it boil for a long time! The water doesn't have to boil very hard, but it's important to keep the temperature of the water close to 100°C. Remember to keep stirring from time to time.

 

Step 5: Strain the weed butter. As soon as the cannabis butter has been in the pan long enough, it is time to filter it. We use an old tea towel, a kitchen sieve and a metal container in which the butter is ultimately stored. Place the sieve on top of the container where you want the butter to end up, and place the towel over the sieve. Then take the pan of liquid butter with weed and pour it through the tea towel. The butter will now slowly run through the towel and the sieve into the container. After letting it sit for a while, you can wring out the tea towel (with the weed in it) to squeeze the last bits of butter out of the weed. Otherwise a lot will remain in the weed or in the towel. Note, the butter is hot, so wear gloves if necessary!

 

Step 6: All the butter has now been seperated from the plant material. Essentially, your weed butter is now ready! You can put it in the fridge to let it solidify, or use it straight away in a cannabis dish recipe. We let it solidify slightly and went on to make the spacecake straight away.

 

Baking The Space Cake

Now that we're done making the weed butter, we can continue making the rest of the cannabis cake!

 

Step 7: Pre-heat the oven to 150 - 160 degrees Celsius.

 

Step 8: Put the cannabis butter in a large mixing bowl (if you have not made cannabis butter, add the ground cannabis and butter to the mixing bowl now). Add the milk, eggs, sugar, baking powder, salt and vanilla sugar. Now start mixing, slowly adding the flour little by little while mixing. Mix for about 5 minutes until the batter is completely smooth.

 

Step 9: Grease up the inside of the baking tin with butter or nonstick cooking spray, and sprinkle a little flour on it. This way the cake does not stick to the cake tin when you remove the cake from the tin.

 

Step 10: Put the batter into the cake dish, and place it in the oven. Let the cake bake for about 60 minutes. Don't open the oven while the cake is inside, or it will collapse / sag.

 

Step 11: Take the cake out of the oven and let it cool in the cake tin for about 15 minutes. Then you take it out of the cake tin (put it upside down and remove the cake tin). Let it stand for another 15 minutes, and your space cake is ready!
