How Long Does A Bong Last?

A bong is a waterpipe for weed (cannabis), and offers many advantages over a classic pipe or joint. But how long does a bong last? Read it in this article!

How quickly does a bong wear out, and how long does a bong last?

You don't buy a bong to throw it away again after using it for one week. The degree of wear on your bong and the speed at which it wears out depends on several factors. Here we discuss all the points that you should take into account when buying a bong, and how to ensure that your bong remains in good condition for as long as possible.

The material of which the bong is made

The material of which the bong is made obviously has a major influence on its lifespan. Bongs are made of all kinds of different materials, such as glass, plastic (acrylic), stone, silicone, ceramic, epoxy, wood, bamboo ... there's probably more bong materials than you could possibly imagine. To read more about the different bong materials, check out our blog.

If you buy a bong that's supposed to last a long time, then we think you're best off looking at borosilicate glass bongs. Borosilicate glass is a strong type of glass that is used for all kinds of applications, for example laboratory materials (hence the name "scientific glass bongs" or "laboratory glass"), but also oven dishes. It is very strong, scratch-resistant, heat-resistant and less prone to shock damage, making it an ideal material for bongs. The strength and resistance to wear are the biggest differences between borosilicate and "normal glass" or "soft glass".

Wooden bongs, plastic bongs and stone/ceramic bongs are also quite wear-proof if you treat them well. The big downside of these materials is that they are harder to (keep) clean, and therefore they are really no match for borosilicate glass bongs.

How do you treat your bong?

The speed at which your bong wears out or breaks not only depends on the material. The way you treat your bong has a major influence on its lifespan. Most bongs break while they're being cleaned, when they're taking outside, or when you're under the influence of alcohol or drugs (or simply a lot of weed) and therefore less careful with your bong. What also happens quite a lot,  is that stoners who smoke out of the window (to prevent the house from smelling like weed) accidentally smash their bong against the stone windowsill or wall while coughing. These are often "stupid" accidents that can easily be prevented if you're just a little careful.

The overall quality of the bong

Not only the material and the way you handle your bong have their influence on the speed at which your bown wears out. Maybe even more important is the overall quality of the bong. We're talking about the way the bong is made. Is it a Chinese mass-production bong, or is it a German handmade bong where a lot of attention has been put into the production and finishing? This is a very important point, because sometimes mass production bongs have manufacturing defects from the moment they come out of the factory, or other defects/shortcomings that cause the bong to wear out or break faster. This is especially true for percolator bongs: a properly finished "tree percolator" won't break easily because the percolators tubes are individually connected, making the percolator much stronger. A premium-quality bong won't break easily, because the weak points are usually reinforced.

But that's not to say that a cheap bong is always a bad buy. Quite the contrary! There are many stoners who buy a 30 euro bong (or even cheaper) and use it for many, many years. A cheap bong can offer fantastic value for money if you manage to keep it in good shape. So it really depends on your personal preferences and requirements.

Tips to make a bong last longer

Below are a few tips to make a bong last longer and improve the lifespan of your pipe:

  • Good cleaning: clean with the right products to prevent scratches and to ensure that dirt cannot adhere to the wall of the bong. If necessary, use Limpuro Tar Blocker for bongs.

  • Do not take your bong outside, but leave it in a fixed smoking spot.

  • Put down your bong before you blow out the smoke and start coughing, because often the accidents happen while coughing after the smoking session.

  • Did your bong break? You can often repair your bong! At Bongify we sell special bong glue that you can use to repair all kinds of materials (including glass).
