Bongs: What is Borosilicate Glass?

Borosilicate glass bongs are very popular, and there are good reasons for that. But what exactly are borosilicate glass bongs, and why are they so good? Read everything about borosilicate glass and bongs in this article.

Borosilicate Glass Bongs

There are good reasons to produce bongs from borosilicate glass instead of "regular" glass or soft glass. First of all, borosilicate glass bongs are much stronger and more durable than soft glass bongs. If you use your bong a lot, it's good to know that your bong can easily last for many years. But there's more; perhaps the most important reason to use silicate glass for making bongs, is that it is much more resistant to extreme temperatures and thermal shock (quick temperature changes). So it won't break from extreme heat, and it won't break if you rinse it with hot water. Another great advantage of borosilicate glass is that it has a high resistance to corrosion; which ensures that your bong remains nice and clear, looking like new.

Borosilicate glass are easier to clean than soft glass bongs thanks to their smoother, unpenetrable surface. This also makes it very unikely for the glass to chip.

These are the main advantages of borosilicate glass:

  • Strength
  • Durability
  • Extreme Temperature Resistance
  • Thermal Shock Resistance
  • Easy To Clean
  • Extreme Optical Clarity
  • Resistant to Corrosion / Erosion

Are borosilicate glass bongs worth the money? If you ask us, definitely. There are many well-priced borosilicate bongs available today, and we have them in stock.

What is Borosilicate Glass?

Wikipedia: "Borosilicate glass is a type of glass with silica and boron trioxide as the main glass-forming constituents. Borosilicate glasses are known for having very low coefficients of thermal expansion (~3 × 10−6 K−1 at 20 °C), making them resistant to thermal shock, more so than any other common glass. Such glass is less subject to thermal stress and is commonly used for the construction of reagent bottles. Borosilicate glass is sold under such trade names as Borcam, Borosil, DURAN, Suprax, Simax, BSA 60, BSC 51 (By NIPRO), Heatex, Endural, Schott, Refmex, Kimble, MG(India) and some (but not all) items sold under the trade name Pyrex."

Some words often used instead of borosilicate for bongs: glass, pyrex, glass blowing, pyrex glass, glass tube, pyrex glass bowls, pyrex glass tubes, scientific glass, borosilicate glass tube, laboratory glassware, silica glass, heat resistant glass

Other types of glass bongs

Although more and more bongs are being made of borosilicate glass, there are many bongs that are made of "regular" glass. Why? Simple: it's cheaper than borosilicate glass. There is a high demand for cheap bongs, and that's the main reason for many companies to keep producing soft glass bongs. Although we at Bongify prefer borosilicate glass for bongs simply because it has so many advantages, we also have a few regular glass bongs in stock for the people who are looking for their first bong or for one-time events such as parties and festivals. If there's a good chance that the bong will be broken or gone by the end of the night, why not just buy a cheap bong instead of throwing away a high-quality borosilicate glass bong?

Other applications of borosilicate glass

Although most glass items are not made of borosilicate glass, the material is still widely used. It is often used for producing oven dishes, laboratory glassware (reagent bottles, test tubes, beakers), healthcare, lighting (flashlights, high pressure sodium lights), aquariums, telescopes and aerospace components. All of these applications have one thing in common: they benefit greatly from borosilicate glass' properties such as thermal shock resistance, corrosion resistance and optical clarity.
